How to configure SMS and authentication apps for two factor authentication (2FA)

Upon your initial login, you will be able to choose to use the QR code provided to setup via an authentication app. We also use Amazon Cognito for SMS verification which is provided incase you would prefer to SMS verification for 2FA.

Once you are logged into your account, you can then switch your method of authentication, our recommended method of 2FA is through an authentication app.

How to setup an authenticator app

These are free to download from the app store on your mobile phone, such as Google or Microsoft's authenticator apps. See the steps below to download and start using an authenticator app for your 2FA.

πŸ’‘ If you do not have access to a mobile phone, you can set up a desktop authenticator app. Please ask your IT department if your company has a preferred desktop authentication app that you can use. Otherwise, there are many free desktop authenticator apps available, such as Yubico.

  1. If you already have an authenticator app, please head straight to step 4.

  2. Search for Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator on your relevant app store (or the app of your choice).

  3. Download the app of your choice and follow the steps to get yourself set up.

  4. Log into your Risk Ledger account and go to Settings.

  5. On the My Account section, scroll to the bottom of the screen to find Configure 2FA and an accompanying QR code.

  6. You will need to scan this code on your chosen authenticator app.

  7. On the authenticator app, navigate to the button at the bottom right of your screen and click Scan a QR Code. 8. If scanning the QR code isn't possible, manually enter the secret key displayed on the Risk Ledger setup page into your authenticator app.

  8. Once the app is synced, enter the 6-digit code generated by the app to finalize the setup on Risk Ledger.


Logging in and using an authenticator app

Once this is configured, you will need to open the authenticator app when Risk Ledger prompts for a 2FA code, and enter the code which appears on your app.

The 6-digit code is dynamically generated based on the time and your secret key, ensuring that it changes frequently for added security.

You can switch back to SMS whenever you would like, but we find that authenticator apps can be more reliable than SMS codes.

Troubleshooting Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

If you encounter issues during setup or login, consider these steps:

  • Ensure that you are scanning the correct QR code from the "Configure 2FA" section.

  • Refresh your browser and retry the setup process.

  • Use the manual secret key entry method if your device cannot scan the QR code.
